Dear Friends,
Yesterday, the consensus revenue estimates were released and they confirmed what Republicans have been saying since the Democrats’ budget passed last year: despite the largest tax hike in our history, and the “concessions” the Governor negotiated from the state employee unions, Connecticut is still in the red.
In addition to the unmitigated disaster that has become Gov. Malloy’s budget, Malloy himself is now going to break yet another campaign promise by borrowing money to pay the operating costs of government, plunging us ever further into debt.
“Despite vowing during the campaign not to use the state’s credit card to cover operating costs, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced late Monday he would divert more than $220 million dedicated last year to pay off debt to close a growing deficit in the current budget.” -Keith M. Phaneuf. “Malloy would use state’s credit card payments to cover operating deficit”. The CT Mirror. April 30, 2012.
The Malloy Administration is now in full damage control mode. Having been in office for a year and a half with total control of the government, he can no longer try to pawn his problems off on the preceding administration. He owns this budget and this fiscal policy, while breaking promise after promise…and we have to make sure that folks know that.
If that wasn’t enough, just last night House Democrats, under pressure from Gov. Malloy, passed Same Day Voter Registration. This means that anyone can wander into the polls on Election Day, NOT have to show photo identification, and vote right then and there. I don’t need to tell you what the ramifications are…we got a glimpse of it in Bridgeport in 2010. You can read more about this in the CT Post article here.
As candidates for State House, RTC Chairs, State Central members and grassroots activists, I am asking you to take the time to write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Please spend a moment reading the two articles linked above and use the information to educate your neighbors on what the Governor and his Democratic pals in the legislature are doing. The only way to hold Malloy and the Democrats accountable is to arm our citizens with the truth.
Sincerely,
Larry Cafero

Dear Friend,
Our great state is facing some serious challenges. Businesses are closing, people are out of work and Governor Malloy thinks this is the time to focus our efforts on repealing the death penalty and legalizing medical marijuana.
Yesterday, Quinnipiac University released their latest poll, which included a measurement of Governor Malloy’s approval, as well as several key issues that have recently come before the legislature. To put it simply, the Governor is underwater.
The poll shows that he is on the wrong side of every major statistical measurement. His favorability is back down to only 37% and Malloy continues to lose ground among women. Voters overwhelmingly disapprove of his handling of the state budget, his handling of the state economy, and his record high tax increase in 2011. Most people continue to have a negative outlook on Connecticut’s economic future. In sum, this poll should give Governor Malloy, and his Democrat counterparts in the legislature, some serious cause for concern. It is also worth noting that President Obama’s popularity in our state also slid, registering at 49% (which is almost his lowest rating in Connecticut since his election).
All of these indicators lead to one inevitable conclusion: the residents of Connecticut are extraordinarily unhappy with the course that Governor Malloy and the Democrats in the legislature have charted. Couple that with the fact that Mitt Romney is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and plays well in our state, I continue to believe that 2012 can and will be a good year for our party in Connecticut.
While we don’t have the opportunity to give Dan Malloy his walking papers, we do have the ability to build a firewall against him by electing a Republican majority in the state House of Representatives. I trust that you will do all you can to ensure that a Republican is elected (or re-elected) as your state representative this year!
Sincerely,
Larry Cafero
